Explanation of the course
The golf field, is located in a valley that is isolated from any urban environment and within a perfectly preserved Mediterranean forest. The wide presence of different types of pine trees as well as a large collection of shrub species, makes the environment a natural refuge for a large number of animal, birds and even some types of amphibians that gradually become attracted once more by an environment that years ago they were originally expelled from due to the agricultural use of the property.
LThe total area of the land covers 200 Ha of which 60 are destined for the golf course and its facilities. Due to the topography of the land and its vegetal wealth, masses of forest have been left included within the design, creating green spaces that, in some cases, are considered hazards and others out of bounds but they have undoubtedly added more more natural elements to the course.
The transformation of agricultural environment to golf course, made some of the holes run at different levels, giving the sensation of having been sculpted within the terrain of mountain rock. In part if it was so, but the different levels of orange fields marked the lie of the land.
No doubt the main design intent is to create golf course in which the natural environment reclaimed its space, lost years ago due to continuous traditional agricultural activities in the area.
Teeing off areas and Access paths
The golf course has an average of 5 teeing off points per hole, up to 6, on the par 5s and some par 4s.
The main reason behind this is that it offers the golfer the possibilty to choose their tee according to their level of play and in case of weather conditions, affected by the prevailing winds. There are sufficient alternative tee positions to compensate thes different wind directions (Levante y Poniente).
Thanks to this, we can set up the course daily and at the same time modify its difficulty and length.
The Access to Green and tees are mostly paths made of concrete and in other áreas which are between holes and go between the pine forests the paths are made of gravel ensuring stability for buggies.
The natural vegetation is being allowed to grow in a controlled way to the point of invading the limits of these paths, blending it perfectly into the background.
The buggies can be used on the fairways, as the paths only exist in the areas between tee and green and from green to tee. The use of buggies in areas of rough and steep slopes is strictly forbidden as it can severely damage the condition of these zones.
The types of grass used when creating the golf course are the following:
- Greens: Agrostis stolonifera T1
- Tees and fairways: Lolium perenne Grand Slam II
- Rough: Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis and Festuca arundinacea
Means of drainage and water recirculation system
On our course we must distinguish two ways of obtaining water. The first are our own resources (a natural spring and underground water from a well, legalized for this purpose). Furthermore, we have use of the waters which runoff from rainfall and occasional outcrops of water from underground.
Water from our well and our spring is pumped according to needs of a few Lakes from which gravity water is distributed by the irrigation system.
Water drains and surface runoffs are redirected to the lakes from which water can be stored or used for irrigation. 70% Of the water that falls on the field can be used for irrigation.
The field is perfectly designed to withstand intense rainfall and allow play to be resumed within hours once the rain has stopped.
We have reached 180 L/m2 of rainfall within 24 hours and it has been possible to play with buggy on the fairways the following day, something which does not happen on many golf courses around us.
Technical characteristics of golf course
The course is characterized by a modern construction, with a movement of the Earth perfectly adapted to the original topography of the land, with an ecological system of drainage, which allows the maximum use of the rainfall in the area and with precise care of the consumption of fertilizers and pesticides, since our priority is to care for and preserve the natural environment that surrounds us and that is our greatest asset.
The irrigation system is still the highest level of automation, allowing for minimum water consumption. The daily needs are calculated from our modern weather station and the water is distributed accurately for each area of the field according to its requirements.
Machinery park is modern, with low levels of emissions of CO2 as well as acoustic levels and therefore highly compatible with the surrounding fauna. We have within our park machinery with hybrid and electric vehicles that contribute to reducing our carbon waste.
Our best holes
All the holes as we have already explained, our perfectly blended into the original landscape, as much in the mountainous background as well as the original lie of the land.
All the holes have adapted their tee positions according to the surrounds, allowing enough space to play in comfort, minimising the consumption of water, allowing the water to be recycled and ensuring that the surrounding woodlands regenerates.
The 4 most emblematic holes on this course are:
